Some of our recent orders & how we've been getting on!
Hello to all who are reading this blog! We have been very busy baking away these last weeks since I last did a blog entry, and in this one I have included some of our recent orders. I can definitely start seeing a style catching on with the bow on the cakes, and we are just starting to define our niche, which is buttercream iced celebration cakes & wedding cakes. We do cater to each individual order, and even though we have a unique style and flair, we do our best to make each order as individual as possible for you. So take a look, and please don't hesitate to ring us up even 2 days before your celebration or party, as we will always do our best to cater for you even if it is last notice.

Christmas (already?!), Comedy and...CAKE!
Well Hello..and apologies for the very late blog entry. Our bakery has been very busy these last weeks, with orders and the school holidays! I have also started experimenting quite a lot with layer cakes in the kitchen, and they have been selling very well; especially our oreo, our (what's becoming a trademark) snickers, and the grasshopper.
As well as this, we held (with the glorious help of Steve Shooter-Fixated on (you can find him on fb and Twitter), our very first, and hopefully the first of a few, comedy and cake night, featuring Sam J.Brown (BrownPineapple), Arran Johnson, Peter Marshall and the Lomos and Dave Shaw!
Here's one of the reviews of the show! http://pmatl.posterous.com/having-our-cake-and-eating-it
We had a brilliant time, and hope to do it again soon. Also we truly couldn't believe that we managed to fit in at least 25 extra chairs in the bakery...LOL!
Okay, so back to cake talk.
It seems that everyone is starting to talk about Christmas at the moment! We cannot believe that in a few months, we'll have been in our bakery for a year. We feel extremely happy and (although slightly lacking in sleep..:), lucky to still be here.
We will be organizing a small bday bash for the bakery near the 11th of December, (which the council allowing of course), will include fuschia pink alcoholic punch, free mini cupcakes, lots of music and hopefully dancing...we are hoping* to have some brilliant comedians back to do a small little gig for us as well on the night.
We will be organizing ourselves a bit better this year, and we'll be making vintage style gazed fruit cakes, in a 4", 6" and 8" size, starting from £10.00. They will be presented as little presents with bows and ribbons, and covered cakes with marzipan and soft icing will be available to order from late October.
We'll be taking our fruit cakes to the September food and drink festival as well, so please make sure to stop by our little stall near the fountain and take a look at our goodies (layer cakes, cupcakes, brownies and fruit cake).
Other seasonal treats like cakes and cupcakes made with apples, caramel, and moreeee goodies will be available from September all the way through to December...luuverly.
Lots of love,
Sooty xxx
*pleaseee...! :D

Grocery Items, Mocktails & some recent orders!
Being styled as a retro American diner, we thought it would be about time to start stocking some american grocery goodies! So they are on their way, hopefully here mid week and will be presented for sale in our new white bookcase near the entrance! Marshmallow fluffs, wonka candy and more :).
We are also looking to be a place in York where you can enjoy a 'mocktail' or alcohol free beer & wine; and hopefully we will start stocking fruity alcohol free beers and festive drinks like mulled 'wine' that can complement a moist slice of fruit cake, a coffee and walnut cupcake, or that you can take home and enjoy with your treats! We will be hopefully selling alcohol free mulled wine in the September food and drink festival along with lovely fruit cake!
Also, for those that haven't seen us on fb or twitter (where we normally post most of our orders etc, here are some recent ones!

Novelty cakes/complicated cakes
So I know I decided to call the bakery a 'cupcakery', but we do make a variety of other products! Cookies took over last week (as i became slightly obsessed..), now banana breads, and I am also dabbling in small breads! Fig & walnut mini breads are going to be on the menu this weekend YUM :D.
Also, (and truly big thank you to the lovely customer and his family who ordered this cake), I made my first ever 3d and tattoo inspired cake last week. It really was a work of love, it took a long time, but I am ever so grateful I was given this chance, and was over then moon by the positive feedback.

So if you have something different in mind, the more different the better for us! pop in with your request, and I would be more than happy to do my best and make it a reality (make with cake :D).
And please remember, in the bakery, we don't only serve cupcakes, so don't let the name put you off if you haven't popped in already!
Much love,
sooty xx
ps. we did not win the National Cupcake championships, but were truly blessed with positive and wonderful comments from our customers. It did show us that lovely feedback and support from our local community is what matters most, so we would like to say a massive thank you X
Monday 11th June 2012
NATIONAL CUPCAKE CHAMPIONSHIPS 2012!
We've had some exciting news in the bakery! The 'Yorkshire Rose' cupcake, and the 'Hurricane' have both been shortlisted for the national cupcake championships which will be taking place in London on the 2nd of July at the ICA.

'The Hurricane' (our own little twist on the classic cocktail recipe)

'The Yorkshire Rose' a delicate cupcake with rhubarb.
Whatever the result may be from the competition, we will announce asap! We're looking forward to having a day in London, and dressing up a little bit after being in safety shoes and jeans for the last 6 months :P.
Also as a quick update, if anyone who is reading this is wanting to book some one to one decorating lessons, please email me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or pop by the bakery weekdays (not Mondays) from 10am.

Freshness and Quality at Sooty's!

This past weekend, we were asked frequently who our cake suppliers are, and if we really make the cakes in the bakery, and if the cakes that are designed on the window display are really decorated by me. The answer is yes!
We are a family run business, and I, (Sooty), make everything in the bakery; ranging from the cupcakes, brownies, layer cakes, scones and other goodies we might come up with. On the weekends we have a greater variety of goods. We do not have a cake supplier.
I make all my cake batters daily, and bake every morning before we open at 10am. Our number of cupcakes ranges daily (we naturally have more on the weekend), but we do prefer to sell out rather than keep selling them the next day.
Our brownies, layer cakes and scones have a larger 'shelf life' and we keep them overnight in the fridge for up to 2 days if we haven't sold them out on the day.
i use butter, milk, flour, sugar, vanilla pods and pure cocoa; as well as fresh fruits, jams and cordials (eg elderflower), but I never use ready mixes, margarine or oils (apart from the carrot cake which uses vegetable oil).
Our frosting is also made on the premises with butter, milk, icing sugar and vanilla pods.
All the cupcakes, cakes and bakes are lovingly handmade daily, so come have a try!

Sooty's Book Club (& Cake!)
We have recently noticed that we are indeed consumed with conversations on what flavour to bake next, what mixing jars we should make, and generally everything to do with baking and decorating. I think we need a bit of time off! So, we're having a book club on the 31st of May (starts at 7:00pm)!
This month we're reading "A Reliable Wife' by Robert Goolrick, a story filled with secrets, twists & one that is reminiscent of 'Rebecca' & 'Wuthering Heights'.

So, if you fancy an evening of chatting about a lovely book & eating cakey nibbles, email us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. , or pop by the bakery to book your place. (We found the book on Amazon for .46p and 2.80 delivery).
Hope to see you then!

Events in the pipeline & fun decorating lesson in the bakery!
Whoa i have neglected my blog! For good reasons though, as things are seeming to be picking up in the bakery! We have more orders coming in for exciting cakes & cupcakes, and I look forward to making them and posting all photos on fb and online.
As well as that, we took part in our first ever vintage event yesterday at the Barbican. It was nice to be back on a stall, and it was lovely to meet new people. I grabbed a fab bargain on some lovely vintage earrings, only 5 pounds :D.
Our very exciting news is that we have booked and confirmed our place at the Harrogate Wedding Show for the 29th & 30th of September 2012!
Here is the link below:
http://www.theukweddingshows.co.uk/wedding-shows/harrogate-2012/international-centre.html
We are looking forward to that a lot, and are already sketching ideas for our polystyrene cakes that we'll take with us. There is also another event in the pipeline, in Leeds! Thinking that we might need to get a minivan soon...maybe a VW? Yes :D.
Now getting back to the title..! Some days ago, we had our first decorating lesson in the bakery. The two lovely ladies took a leap of faith as we didnt really know what we were doing in the beginning, but ended up with 12 beautifully decorated cupcakes.

The lovely ladies made their own frostings, and decorated 6 cupcakes each. The whole lesson was just over 1 hour and a half, but it was the best time we all had in the bakery so far! If you would be interested in something like this, please contact me at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. , and we can arrange something to your interests.
Getting back to sorting the old diary out & to the screaming kettle!
Much love,

Piping tips & boxes...?
New thoughts on the retail side of the cupcakery, and working towards stocking piping tips, boxes & other cakey items :D.
In the theme for Pancake Day, (I wish I could sell pancakes from the bakery!) we will have pancake inspired cupcakes, including lemon/sugar, nutella & blueberry, along with some other flavours which you can find everyday. And then..the next exciting date in the calendar is Mother's Day! We will have handmade roses available in the cupcakery during that weekend, but if you fancy taking advantage of the offer & sorting out special flavours & colours, please have a look at this:

Just to say that our opening hours are changing for the spring time! (which is meant to have arrived by now?...O.o). We will be opening 11am-6:00pm Tuesday-Saturday, and 12:00-5:30pm on Sundays.
Also, in this blog entry, I would really like to say thank you to the couples that chose Sooty's for their wedding cake & cupcakes. It really makes me happy to work with lovely people who are trusting this new business, and I wish them all the happiness in the world. I am really looking forward to creating these orders, and I hope that they are everything that you have imagined them to be.
Much love,
Sooty x

Snoowwww...& coldness.
Wasn't all this meant to happen in December?! Around Xmas..anyway! Very sniffly here at home today but can't stop thinking about baking & decorating :D so thought i should catch up on some purchases.
Ordered a VERY cool rose cutter, carnation cutters, some leaf ones & corn syrup (!) to start practicing on some lace work for cakes. I'm taking part in Discover Vintage York in the Barbican in early March, so thought I should have some fake cakes with lovely lacing on them and some pearls along with the sugarpaste carnations! Sounds overall too much, but it won't be; looking forward to making these & posting photos on here soon.
Funny thing about this is that I never thought I would be into sugarwork. I always thought that it was something that I couldn't get my head around and that it's impossible (as I havent got the most delicate fingers lol). Thankfully there are some good videos out there on youtube with people who are reallly patient and are explaining every single detail on how to make something beautiful out of sugarpaste. I will bookmark the ones I am using and post them on here as well :D
Ordered some funky sugar lip sprinkles for Valentine's Day as well, and have been thinking of having something like a half term offer on, like tea & cake etc! Need to sort a good one on for that and stick one of my posters on the window :D.
Off back to sorting out this runny nose. WIth LOTS of tea :D. yay.
Much love,
Sooty x
Monday 30th January 2012
Now these moulds i will get excited about! (allright..I also love mouldy cheeses..).
Speaking about cheese, what a cheesy title for this blog entry! But I am hugely excited. Just ordered some funky moulds from Amazon for fondant work. I'm still trying to get my head around proper sculpting of figures out of fondant, but until I perfect that, I will try to learn with these! So, i have got some beautiful 3d rose designs, a few baby ones (so we can actually cater for christenings and baby showers) and a tiny bow one :).
Resident's weekend was very busy, and I'm glad that the offer made new people come in and try the cupcakes! I have printed loyalty cards but forgot to hand them out! If you are a loyal customer and are reading this, please pick one up near the display area and keep bringing it in; after 5 purchases you can either get a free cupcake or 10% off any order.
I remember a while ago I mentioned I wasn't into Valentine's Day. But, I keep seeing Valentine's things everywhere! So I can't be left out I suppose :). But, in contrast, I'm not putting prices up for special Vday orders, but having an offer:

So, if you fancy something loved up for your sweetie, I can make you cupcakes with some sugarpaste lips, messages etc. Just pop in the shop, give me a ring at 289603 or use the contact page on here!
Much love,
Sooty

Excellent quality, affordable prices for a treat, the way businesses should be?
Verrry cold day here at Sooty's the electric heaters have been working full time overnight & this morning! However, not to be too overly sweet, I came across the most inspiring article on a business I read in a while. It's about this businesswoman named Suzanne Batlle, (in Miami, USA) who in this turbulent time gave up her banking job & opened up a funky little ice cream shop that sells more than 40 flavours of ice cream a day.
But, whats the inspiring point? Well, Suzanne makes ice cream, from scratch everyday using only the best and most natural ingredients available. AND she sells at low profit margin prices. Because she thinks that people deserve good quality & luxury, but don't deserve to pay the world for it. I love that lady and I haven't even met her. (yet lol). You can read the whole article here:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-16450031
It seems that it has become all too common to think that you need to part with serious cash in order to enjoy yourself. 3.50 for a coffee, 2.00 for a cupcake. What's that going to cost a whole family that wants to have a Saturday outing? Or a bride who is on a budget but wants to have something of good quality? (I have been in this position and it wasn't pretty).
So, what is this blog entry about? Advertising? Anger at businesses who work on such high profit margins but sell poor quality? I suppose a little bit of both; at the end of the day I am biased, as we are trying to do the same thing as Suzanne.
Vent over, and I hope this hasn't put off people, but instead made them realise that sometimes small businesses don't only work for themselves, but to also see a massive smile on their' customers face and not a massive hole in their pocket.
Much love,
Sooty x

'Blue Monday' today as mentioned by a lot of people! Lovely..does it really make you feel better knowing that you can actually have a right to feel a little down in the slumps today? lol! Anyhow, day off today as shop is closed on Mondays, and always on these days it's really good to sit down with a cup of tea (&coffee yay) to just do research on cakes & cupcake designs and flavours.
Already thinking of some designs for stacked layer cakes which could be used for weddings, christenings etc, so all i need to do now is get some dummy cake bases & make it happen! Looking forward to decorating these in the shop this & next week.
There will also be an offer for the residents of York at Sooty's, will post it on here as well, but you can also find us on facebook: http://www.facebook.com/sootyscupcakery
& twitter: https://twitter.com/#!/SootysCupcakery
Also, not to bore anyone, but as a start up business, it does make me feel proud & very happy to receive good reviews. I just thought for anyone who might be looking at the site but hasn't had a chance to visit us yet, please read them & hopefully this will make up your mind to come give Sooty's a try :). This is another review which has been published in 'The Yorker' very recently:

I can't copy & paste html text on this blog as it goes funny, so just copied & pasted the link!

Saturday 14th January 2012
Very exciting Saturday here at Sooty's today! Completed 2 orders both for birthdays! One with normal size cupcakes, & the other for mini cupcakes & normal ones. Some photos are below:

Normal size cupcakes in 5 different flavours! Choc Chip, Banana, Chocolate, Vanilla & Vanilla/Choc.
Had a lot of fun doing this order. Next order was one that I had to get proper prepared for! Did the fondant decorations 2 days before so they can air dry & off I went this morning to make 40 mini cupcakes & 4 normal sized ones for another birthday.

Mini 'Snickers' cupcakes!

Mini cupcakes are notoriously weird in their baking! They can burn all too easily or they can overflow as well..I was a casualty of the overflowing..so used them to go into York with samples (yay in the cold! :P) & baked again for the order. Second try was perfect & they were a delight to decorate.
Looking forward to doing mini cupcakes again; so sorry if this sounds too girly but they're so cute!

Fabulous blog & review for Sooty's Cupcakery! (by Laura Reynolds-editor-The Yorker Lifestyle).
THURSDAY, 12 JANUARY 2012
I made a fabulous discovery yesterday. It's a brand spanking new cupcake shop in the centre of York called Sooty's Cupcakery. Ok, if I'm being honest, it wasn't a spontaneous discovery, I was going there with the purpose of reviewing it. But boy am I glad I did.
I know what you're thinking. It's just another one of those overpriced cupcake places that are taking over the world, giving yummy-mummies a place to yibber-yabber and spend their husband's hard earned money. WELL YOU'RE WRONG!
Take it from a self-titled cupcake connoisseur- I used to work in a cake shop, I've spent hours perfecting cupcake recipes, I spent the eve of my 18th birthday making and decorating 100 cupcakes-Sooty's is the bees knees, the cat's whiskers, the dog's toenails, in cupcakes (although you'll be pleased to hear that I found none of the above in my cake).
I've been to the famous Hummingbird Bakery in Spitalfields, London, and even reviewed that one for Itchy City. I can honestly say, hand on heart, that my visit to the Hummingbird Bakery didn't even come close to my visit to Sooty's.* The service at Hummingbird was impersonal, the hot chocolate below average, and even the cupcakes, the holy grail for which I had made my journey, were nothing special.
Sooty's, on the other hand, was a dream come true. They had a wide range of flavours and toppings, and the cupcakes were only £1.49 each, and very reasonably sized-quite the opposite of the majority of similar businesses. Not only were the cupcakes cheap, they were perfectly decorated and, most importantly DELICIOUS. The cake was moist and light, not stodgy like some cakes, and the vanilla fondant was the most flavoursome I have ever had, without being overpowering. The accompanying hot chocolate was equally enjoyable, and cheaper than any chain cafe. The staff were uber-friendly, and they had a wider range of choices than were available at Hummingbird.
I am therefore taking this opportunity to demand that all residents and students of York go to Sooty's at least once-although I can guarantee that you will want to go back. It is my understanding that different cakes are available everyday, so all the more reason to go back and sample them all. Sooty's also do cupcakes and occasion cakes to order, and you can mix and match base flavour and fondant flavour-it's like being in Willy Wonka's factory, but real!
Weekly visits to Sooty's are now inked into my diary. I'm only gutted that it arrived when I only have 6 months left in York.**
*I'm honestly not being paid to say this
** I'm actually also gutted that Sooty's has taken over the retail unit where a craft shop I liked once stood. But cupcakes will make that pain go away.

JANUARY OFFER!
Day off today after baking at the shop for 7 days! Time to do some cupcakey research and see what's out there! Everyone seems to have started talking about Valentine's Day already! I always thought it was a very commercial holiday, so here at Sooty's, we will instead have something like a January sale applied to all cupcakes (whether you'd like them to be Valentine's Day themed, or anything else you have in mind!).
So, for a box of 4 pre-ordered cupcakes (which include sprinkles, chocolate pieces, personalised writing), it's only £5.49.
For a box of 12, £16.49.
You can order in store, via here at the contact form, or even through fb.
Might also research into doing some nice individual apple pies. Have already prepared the short crust pastry in the shop, and now its chilling in the fridge awaiting for some lovely topping to go with it! Apple, custard, some other seasonal fruit?...
Or some nice cheesy & baconey quiches?...Getting hungry now. Off to make a nice mug of tea & enjoy some banana bread!

Chocolate Spoon madness!
Decided to venture on a new product, Sooty's Chocolate Spoons. You can dip these in hot milk and have yourself a lovely original hot chocolate! Nice little treat.
Had the wooden spoons delivered, and the little bags, already had the Callebaut dark choc chips. But no moulds to make them in! After wondering to Lakeland and seeing the little chocolate moulds (for making inny tiny chocolates), decided to use my mini muffin cupcake tray instead & it worked a treat!
We have these spoons in store now, with lovely ribbons (would be cute as a presie!) for £1.19.
Will make Valentine's Day versions of these little ones soon!
